GARDENS

The historic Italian-style gardens of Villa Miralfiore in Pesaro are excellent examples of Renaissance landscape design.

The gardens

Originating in the 16th century with the purchase of the villa by Guidobaldo II della Rovere, they were renovated by architects Bartolomeo Genga and Filippo Terzi. Characterised by a precise geometric subdivision, the gardens feature box hedges delineating symmetrical compartments around an imposing ‘fountain garden’. Once adorned by a quadrangular pergola, now disappeared, these spaces combined fountains, statues and water features, reflecting Mannerist opulence. Despite the transformations and losses suffered over the centuries, thanks to conservative restoration, the gardens of Villa Miralfiore have retained much of their original design, remaining one of the most significant examples of historic Italian gardens in the Marche region. It remains a precious witness to the historical and aesthetic richness of the Italian Renaissance, attracting visitors and lovers of art and landscape architecture.
