This impressive tree is easily recognized by its massive trunk and distinctive bark, which peels away in patches to reveal spots of gray, green, and cream. With its wide, leafy canopy, the Common Plane provides generous shade during the summer months, making it an essential feature of tree-lined avenues and green spaces.

Platanus acerifolia is a natural hybrid between the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and the Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis). It was introduced to Europe in the 17th century, likely in England, where it quickly became one of the most widely planted trees in parks and urban gardens due to its resistance to pollution and ability to adapt to various soil types. This tree can grow to heights of 30-40 meters, with trunk diameters exceeding 1.5 meters in mature specimens.

The Plane’s large, palmately lobed leaves resemble those of maples, inspiring its name “acerifolia”.
In autumn, its foliage transforms into a vibrant display of yellow and golden hues. Its fruits are spherical achenes, often hanging in clusters that remain through the winter, adding a decorative touch to the landscape.

The Plane is not only a symbol of urban resilience but also a witness to history. Many ancient specimens have been planted along grand European boulevards and historic gardens, serving as silent guardians of time. Beyond its ornamental value, this tree plays a significant ecological role, providing shelter for numerous bird and insect species.

["GET
