Planted at the center of the boxwood parterres, these century-old trees form a captivating green frame with their broad, flat canopies. Already visible in historical photographs from the early 20th century, these trees have become essential elements of the garden’s structure.

The Cedrus libani is native to the mountains of Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey and can reach heights of up to 40 meters. It is easily recognized by its expansive, horizontal canopy and short, dark needles, which give the tree a majestic appearance. The wood of the Cedar of Lebanon is aromatic, durable, and has been valued since ancient times for its strength and beauty.

Introduced to Europe during the 17th century, the Cedar of Lebanon has primarily been used as an ornamental tree in parks and historic gardens, symbolizing grandeur and longevity. In Italy, it is particularly common in the gardens of historic villas and urban green spaces, where its presence adds a regal touch to the landscape.

In addition to its ornamental beauty, the Cedar of Lebanon plays a crucial ecological role. Its canopy provides shelter to numerous bird species and small animals, contributing to the biodiversity of its surroundings. In Middle Eastern cultures, this tree is revered and considered sacred; its wood has been used to build temples and ships, underscoring its historical and cultural importance.

During the restoration of the historic park, the cedars were pruned using tree-climbing techniques to remove only the dry parts at height, stimulating new vegetation. Treatments with root biostimulants and mycorrhizae were also applied to enhance the trees’ vitality and resilience.

The cones (strobili) take more than two years to mature, eventually forming the classic barrel-shaped cones, identical to those of other cedar species.
https://villamiralfiore.it/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/aghi_CL-rotated.jpg
The leaves are needles arranged in rosettes, similar to those of the larch, with a bright green color (dark green when older) and whitish stripes running lengthwise, which are more or less noticeable.
