Within the gardens of Villa Miralfiore<\/strong>, several tree species were planted during the 20th century and have now reached remarkable sizes. In the Papa Albani garden<\/strong>, one particularly curious and striking plant, known for its splendid summer blooms in lavender blue, is the Vitex agnus-castus<\/strong><\/em>, commonly referred to as the Chaste Tree<\/strong>. While this species typically has the structure of a shrub, it can, as in this case, grow to the size of a small tree with an umbrella-shaped canopy.<\/p>\n

Vitex agnus-castus<\/strong><\/em> is native to the Mediterranean region and Central Asia, thriving in sunny environments and well-drained soils. It can grow to a height of 2-4 meters, forming a broad, rounded canopy. It is appreciated not only for its ornamental value but also for its medicinal properties. Extracts from the plant are used in herbal medicine to regulate female hormonal balance and alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.<\/p>\n

The Chaste Tree<\/strong> has been used in gardens and historic parks since the Middle Ages when it was often cultivated in monasteries for its medicinal benefits. Its introduction to Italian gardens is also linked to its ability to attract pollinators, thus contributing to local biodiversity.
